We are honored and pleased to present the proceedings of the 1st Ibero-American
Symposium in Computer Graphics (SIACG 2002), held in Guimarães.
This conference was very special since it marked the first actual attempt to join the
Computer Graphics communities in both the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America. It is
expected that a series of similar events can follow this symposium in the next years and
alternating the local between Europe and South America.
SIACG 2002 has provided a valuable forum for the discussion on technology and
scientific aspects related to Computer Graphics. We hope that it will promote cooperation
through joint projects in the near future as well as the interchange of people
from different countries.
All papers were submitted electronically and reviewed for their contents by qualified and
independent reviewers. The International Programme Committee selected a total of 36
full papers out of 61 contributions. They have been written in English, although
presentations could be delivered in Portuguese, Spanish or English. In addition to
research papers, nearly one third of the accepted submissions can be classified as practice
and experience papers.
A different way to measure the impact of the symposium is by observing that the papers
included in these proceedings were prepared by authors from 10 different countries.
Additionally, in a companion publication to the proceedings one can find a set of refereed
short papers. This written material has provided the opportunity for most participants to
present new ideas and promising work in progress yet at a more or less embryonic stage.
Many people deserve credit for helping in the genesis of the symposium and their work
must be referred in the conference proceedings. We would like to express our sincere
thanks to all members of the International Programme Committee and to the invited
reviewers for their great effort to get all the papers reviewed in time.
We also thank the invited speakers Markus Gross, Eugene Fiume and Gabriel Taubin,
and express our gratitude to the Organizing Committee for the work done in organizing
this conference in Guimarães.
However, since the quality of any conference cannot be dissociated from the quality of
the corresponding submissions, our best thanks go to the authors who contributed with
their valuable papers and made this conference an undeniable success.
